I recently re-read Meditations by Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius [a book I often carry with me] and I recorded this episode about a paragraph that truly spoke to me, for you to consider—as you optimize your game and escalate your life. I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in an Artificial Age (Penguin Random House). In a world that constantly pressures us to conform, true greatness comes from having the courage to walk your own path, honor your deepest values, and live by the virtues that define who you are. In today's episode, I share the 13 Essential Virtues of American Founding Father, inventor, and philosopher Benjamin Franklin—timeless principles for building character, strengthening self-discipline, and living a life of purpose, integrity, and extraordinary meaning. People call you lucky when they didn’t see your private winters. They missed the early mornings, the risks, the mistakes, the learning and the years of work when no one was watching. Our culture has pushed and trained and brainwashed so many of us to chase money and watches and things so we become “rich.” It’s sad. Because people get hurt (by getting nice things and losing their soul along the way). And this brainwashing is designed to make us think that if we exhaust our energy and spend our lifeforce on this pursuit, we’ll get to a place where we wake up happy. It’ll never happen. Never. Ever. I’ve seen it time and time again with the billionaire clients that I’ve mentored for decades. They feel happy for a week and then the scientific phenomenon of hedonic adaptation takes effect, they normalize the new rewards and, of course, they want more. A great life may have financial independence in it and if that’s important to you then win in this area, please. But without wellness, love, craft and the other forms of wealth (along with my specific tools that optimize each one) a person ends up as the richest person in the graveyard. Human beings are born into clarity yet programmed into fear. …we are taught to ignore our instincts and overindex on logic (which is simply what the majority tells us is possible). And yet your instinct is wiser than your intellect. The great symphonies, artworks and social movements were not made through cold, hard logic but via good-hearted intuition. The best moves I’ve made in my life have been made when I listened to the calls of intuition over the voices of reason — trusting the guidance my wisest self was giving. Lead where you’re planted! Never say, “I’ll show more bravery and resilience when I have a higher title.” Start now. …thinking like a victim is a program you’ve learned and practiced so often it may have become your unconscious operating system. Step outside it and see what you’re doing. Then each day catch yourself and begin inscribing the habit of thinking like a leader. In today's episode you'll learn one simple yet potent method to habituate the trait of facing your fears to make you wiser, stronger and more resilient in the future. High-agency individuals have made peace with discomfort. They know the path to anything extraordinary drives directly through difficulty. When circumstances are hardest, they lean in. When the pressure is greatest, they do their finest work. A masterwork is not made under easy conditions. Neither is a remarkable human life. Victims wish there was no change and complain it’s all so hard and blame conditions, giving away their power to make the future as they want in the process. Do not do this. Do not be like this. A simple idea to get you to your next level: to earn more you must learn more. As you learn what the best do, you will develop new awareness. With better awareness, you can make better choices. And with better choices, you are certain to see better results. Investing in learning is the smartest investment you’ll ever make. And please don’t tell me you are too busy to spend at least 60 minutes a day learning. Some of the busiest people I know read or listen to CDs or do online training for at least an hour a day. A lot of people are too busy being busy. Shift from being busy to getting results. See, the leader who learns the most wins. And you’ll never rise higher in life than who you are. Yes I do believe in destiny. I sense that there is a set of invisible hands guiding us along and encouraging our moves and watching our backs. Having said this, nothing works for someone who does no work. Sorry to say this but there are just too many people on the planet who want the rewards of world-class without lifting a pinky to do what world-class requires. Leadership and personal greatness absolutely requires us to apply APR: Absolute Personal Responsibility. We must set good habits and create clear plans and do the workouts (at 5AM please!) and deliver for clients. We need to read the books and study the craft and care for our loved ones and watch less TV and get the job done. The job of a leader is to find the victory inside every adversity. And the task of each human is to turn defeat into winning and tragedy into triumph. I know that sounds obvious yet those who make their lives beautiful, joyful and great really do make it a practice of seeing windows of opportunity where most spot walls of adversity. I’ve been through a lot in my life. Been bruised and bloodied, disappointed and dejected. Yet, I’ve always done my best to keep moving forward. And seeking the blessing inside the curse, if you get my drift. And once you start operating like this (with the consistency that is the mother of mastery), failure becomes a friend. And a circumstance that introduces you to your gifts, strengths and most high of qualities. I wanted to share a chapter from The Everyday Hero Manifesto with you. The chapter is called The 6 Months Left to Live Question. And here it is... Just imagine. For only a second. That you had merely six months left to live. ...6 short months to do all those things you’d promised yourself you’d do. ...6 months to visit the Taj Mahal and listen to Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and see the Mona Lisa and walk along The Great Wall of China. ...6 months to write letters of forgiveness to those who wronged you and letters of love to those who cherished you. And only saw the light within you. If you had just six months left to live, what things would you simply stop doing? And what things would you have the boldness and wisdom and strength of heart to begin doing? What is it that you would do? With only 6 months of life left to live. This is the question I ask of you. So you live all that remains of your precious and soaring and lovely life well. FOLLOW ROBIN SHARMA: Instagram Facebook YouTube
More than ever before. I understand that food is medicine. And through the food that you consume every day, you're either destroying your health, creating disease, in creating increasing inflammation, or through the food you eat, you're becoming healthier. Your nutrition also affects your moods. I'm going to repeat that again because it's so important. Your nutrition affects your moods and of course your nutrition is affecting your Healthset. It'll affect your skin. It'll affect your energy. It will affect the quality of your thinking. It will affect your your performance. So you really want to dial in on the right nutritional plan that is best for you. I think a really smart idea is working with the nutritionist, who can really help you calibrate the right foods for you to eat. And on the subject of nutrition, I'm going to talk a little bit about hydration. I think most people are dehydrated. And by the way, first thing in the morning while you're working out, drink a lot of great water because most people wake up dehydrated. There's some very good science confirming right now you're going to love this piece, some very good science coming out right now, confirming that proper hydration is absolutely essential for proper mitochondrial function. If you don't drink enough water, you're not going to have enough energy. And like I suggest to you, protecting and battleproofing your energy is so important. You can have great dreams, great opportunities, great talents. If you don't have the energy that fight to execute all day long, to be great at work, great with your family, run your rituals, do your deliverables. You're never going to rise to world class in your own unique form of private greatness. So drink a lot of water. Make sure you are very, very well hydrated. The final thing I'll just touch on briefly, because it's so fascinating and important to me is fasting. There's also good research coming out talking about the benefits of caloric restriction. Rats were studied on a restricted calorie diet, and these rats performed better and lived longer than the non calorie restricted rats. There's also research confirming that periods of intermittent fasting reduce inflammation and some of the markers for longevity. I think it's fascinating. If you look at a lot of history's greatest heroes and a lot of the great wisdom traditions. They all had one thing in common periods of fasting. Sure, some of these people did it for spiritual purification. Sure, some of these saints and heroes did it to clean out toxic emotions. So they elevated their Heartset. But I've also seen some of the greatest creative, some of the most productive people on the planet. Some of the true inventors and creative geniuses, they all have one thing in common they fasted. And personally, I fast 24 hours two times a week. And what it does for my mental clarity, what it does for my energy, what it does for myself. Discipline is amazing and the ability to sit there. If I'm working on a new book and just drink fresh lemon tea, just drink fresh water. Just drink my two cups of coffee in the morning and then lock and load and bring it on for 8 or 9 or ten hours. Working on the book, not having to get up, not having to distract myself from my tight bubble of total focus because I'm in a fasted state is amazing. What it does for my self-discipline, my mental clarity, my productivity is incredible. So that's a little bit of a rant on fasting, but it just works so well for me. And like anything I'm sharing with you, try it. It might be another game-changer.
One of the brain tattoos of my teachings that has helped so many of my clients is this one: Energy is more important than intelligence. To dominate your game and build your empire you don’t need to be the smartest person in the room. Not at all. You just need to have the most energy. To implement your visions. To bring application to your dreams. And to handcraft a life you adore. Often, a writer has distilled 20 or 30 years of their wisdom and expertise and experiences in a single volume (that you can read in a few good evenings or a series of early mornings). Associating with someone who is living the life you want or someone who has skills you wish for or someone who has the interior qualities you hope to embody leaves you richer than when you picked up the book. Sometimes, a single conversation with the right person alters the unfolding of your life. Same for the right book. Kill Your Darlings. It’s an old writers mantra (credit: William Faulkner) which speaks to the fact that to make your magic real you need to delete everything from your creative project except for that which is absolutely astonishing. When you are building something meaningful, be deliberate about what you let in. Use the news strategically, not reflexively. Seek out places that elevate you—art galleries, forests, great architecture, open water. Visit the spaces where beauty lives. Your environment is not a passive backdrop to your creative life; it is an active ingredient in it. The people you surround yourself with, the places you choose to work, even the music you play—all of it is either feeding your creativity or diminishing it. Although I spoke a lot about legacy years ago (even wrote a book on it 25 years ago called Who Will Cry When You Die?), I no longer think it’s a thing worth pursuing. Because we’ll be dead. So who cares what people say? Better to be great and brave and excellent and loving while you’re alive. That’s the irony: care not about your legacy and live gorgeously now and you’ll automatically create a grand legacy. To be human is to crave a cause. We all need a powerful purpose to get us out of bed every morning and draw out the finest within us. I viscerally believe that one of the dominant reasons so many amongst us are addicted to distraction and living amid apathy is they haven’t found something larger than their own lives to stand for. Once you find your compelling cause, begin to share it with your community. Talk it up. Blog it out. This will give your followers hope + energy + drive. Sure you can meditate and pray and heal and go silent. All such practices work. To help you step into who and all you’re meant to be, as you realize your highest destiny. But, if you and I were having coffee at a simple yet soulful cafe in some special and perhaps even mystical far-off land (Bhutan is on my list) and after a sip or two, you asked me “Robin, what’s the one spiritual skill that lifts every other spiritual skill?” I’d reply, after a sip or two, “learning to get really really really good at letting go.” Sure, it sounds so simple. To… …let go and let God. …to do your best and then have the bravery, wisdom and faith to let life do the rest. …to exercise action and then release longing and wishing and trust the ancient and transformational prayer “thy will be done.” Seems easy. Hard to apply, in reality. Because we all want what we want. It’s such a challenge to let go, and trust that after we’ve done our human part (invested the sweat equity, risen when fallen and stood for excellence) whatever comes is for our absolute best. Yet, why would we not want it? Because it’s for our best, if you get my drift. Most (not all!) of the billionaires, celebrity CEOs and famous entrepreneurs that have come to me for mentoring over the past 3 decades have one thing in common: they are ultra-rich yet happiness poor. It’s just the reality. They are obsessed with success, needy for more and consumed with making their disruptive visions come to life. Nothing else matters for these humans. I help them grow even bigger, better, more inventive companies while showing them proven systems and protocols to slow down, get super healthy, fill their days with more love and handcraft beautiful personal lives. One of the ways I mentor them in achieving this delicate balance include teaching them, in heavyweight detail and with advanced advice, The 8 Forms of Wealth model so that they viscerally understand that money is only one form of wealth. This, then, causes them to pursue the other forms of abundance (wellness, family, service to others for example) leading to far deeper feelings of fulfillment. One of the primary assets of genius is time mastery. [Time management is so old-school; the true sport is to master it]. Watch someone stuck in a victim mentality and a life of scarcity and you’ll see they waste their time. On the other side are the rare-air few who get amazing projects done, dominate their domains via their skill and lead lives of boundless joy and fulfillment [because service is the DNA of happiness]. Yes, it’s true: you’re being watched. And so am I. Each day, in all we do -- at home and at work and on the street -- people are watching how we speak and the way we behave and the quality of our integrity. The best leaders influence their followers by understanding that every move they make sends a signal to their team on what behavior sets the standard. In my leadership keynotes for fast-growing companies I share the term “LBE”: Lead By Example and note that it’s the opposite of CBE: Complaint, Blame and Excuse (which gets a leader nowhere). So yes, people do watch what we do, even if we fall into the trap of thinking that they don’t. And our reputation is based on the richness of that doing. We all have hard seasons. Stages where the ground on which we stand seems to crumble, nothing seems to be in our favor and the winter seems endless. To know pain, to endure suffering and to feel as though the trial will never end is to be fully human. And to become most intimate with life itself. “A bad day for the ego is a great day for the soul”, though. From what I can tell—and who truly knows the way the world works—that which appears to unmake us is the very season that rebuilds us. Our pain, in truth, becomes a purifier. Difficulty softens us, unmasks us and opens us—allowing the gifts of wisdom, humility and patience to become our new way of being. I find myself thinking about the people who show us what it truly means to serve humanity. And when I think of that kind of leadership, Nelson Mandela tops my list. His grace. His courage. His forgiveness. His kindness. No matter how busy he was as president of South Africa, he always had time to shake the hand of a cleaner, offer a word of encouragement to a server, or share a laugh with a child. The true measure of a person is how they treat those who can do nothing for them. As I think about it, though, I believe the real secret of his magic was that he was an absolute master of staying focused on his mission. Through times of ease and nights of darkness, he relentlessly stayed true to his ideal of a free and democratic South Africa. A place where all could flourish, regardless of their skin color or ethnic origin. In a world that often pressures us to conform, the true essence of greatness lies in embracing our authentic selves. Each of us is a unique tapestry woven from experiences, dreams, and passions. To live authentically is to honor this tapestry, to present ourselves to the world without fear or reservation. It requires bravery—a courage that inspires us to break free from societal expectations and to express who we truly are. Being authentic means daring to voice your thoughts and beliefs, even when they challenge the status quo. It’s about recognizing that your perspective is valid and valuable. When you speak your truth (even if your voice shakes), you not only empower yourself but also inspire others to do the same. Each time you choose honesty over approval from others, you create a cascading effect of authenticity, encouraging those around you to step into their own light. Ordinary companies chase quarterly earnings. Legendary companies play an astonishingly long game. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos insisted that decisions must make sense 5–7 years out—not just next quarter. In a Bain & Company survey, 81% of top-performing firms said they tie major initiatives to long-term value creation, not just near-term KPIs. These companies innovate patiently, hire strategically (you can’t have an A-grade business with C-level players right?), and invest like they’ll own the future. Not only that, the best firms get that “when you take care of the relationship the money takes care of itself.” So they are obsessively relational versus merely transactional. Great leaders move from being “busy being busy” to being monomaniacally focused on the few things that matter most. In a distracted world, they are disciplined executors. They choose depth over speed, completion over motion, and impact over appearance. They make the hard decisions to prioritize what truly moves the mission forward—and they inspire others to do the same. The famous CEOs I mentor and the celebrated billionaires I advise and the sports heroes I guide and the entertainment royalty I train are ALL “strategic worriers.” Yes. Yes. Yes. “Strategic Worriers.” This means that, of course, they meditate and journal and pray and exercise and nature walk and use their mantras to upgrade their Zen. Inner peace is a priceless treasure. And yet, they never lose their fire. They REFUSE to get stale. They never mail it in. They always bring it on. And this philosophical posture REQUIRES that they worry. Strategically. Imagine that each day of your life you had spectators. Yes, an audience watching the thoughts you run through your brain, the habits you apply through your hours and the way you operate around your activities. I’d bet you’d raise your game. And push a little harder to be the person you aim to be at your end. So yes, people do watch what we do, even if we fall into the trap of thinking that they don’t. And our reputation is based on the richness of that doing.
